General Description

Indoor Volleyball is one of the ESSC’s most popular sports! Practice your digging, blocking, setting and hitting in the division that suits your skill level. The ESSC offers Recreational, Intermediate, Intermediate Plus and Competitive divisions. All leagues are 6 on 6 with a minimum of two females on the court at all times.  After your game, meet up with your teammates and other ESSC players while enjoying exclusive specials at one of our many Sponsor Bars around Edmonton!

Player Testimonial: "Whether you’re a competitive player looking for a fast-paced game, a beginner starting fresh, or someone in-between, there are many options available. Join as a full team with friends or make new friends by registering as a single player. So why aren’t you playing? There is no good reason." - Matt, Thursday Indoor Volleyball

Who Can Play?

The ESSC is an adult league only. All players must be 18 years of age or older before they participate in any ESSC league or event. We accept all levels of skill and experience by offering a wide range of divisions. We welcome full team, small group, individual and substitute registrations.

DIVISION DESCRIPTIONS

Division

                                                       Description

Recreational

For teams that may have some skilled individual players, but that as a whole has little volleyball experience. There is a low skill set for bumping and setting and will not often see 3 hits. No hard hitting allowed. Team Goal: Get it over the net - it doesn't matter how!

Intermediate

This division is for teams or players that have mixed skill level.  Three hits is the goal, with decent ball control while bumping or setting.  Expect to see some hitting and blocking, although hard hitting is not encouraged and you will not typically see strong or organized attacks.  Team goal: try to have 3 hits on every play.

Intermediate Plus

This division is for teams or players that are able to pass with accuracy and have the ability to set organized attacks.  Players rotate and play set positions on the court and have a skilled setter.  This level will see 3 hits each possession with a strong attack game.

Competitive

This division is for teams or players that are highly skilled and have a lot of experience playing organized volleyball.  This is a fast-paced division where you will see organized attacks, plays, and positional players.  Skilled setters are able to run plays for shoot sets, back-row attacks, and other types of plays.  Players must be able to pass off of hard serves accurately to the setter in this division.

The above divisions are created based on skill level and not on competitive behaviour. All SSC players are expected to play with a ‘fun-first, winning second’ attitude. The SSC may move your team up or down a division based on seasonal results.

IMPORTANT INDOOR VOLLEYBALL INFORMATION

Facility Information

The ESSC rents gymnasiums from schools and private facilities located throughout the City of Edmonton.  Any team or player who causes the ESSC to receive a complaint from a facility will be fined $100 and may be removed from the league. For full details, click here.

Equipment

The ESSC provides volleyballs and ensures that all gyms have acceptable nets and standards.  Players set up and take down the nets at the gyms.  All players must wear clean, non-marking indoor shoes.  For Double Opponent Volleyball, an Event Coordinator will bring the equipment to the gym for the 4 teams playing there.  For Single Opponent Volleyball, the Team Captain is responsible for putting down a $60 refundable deposit and picking up their equipment (1 volleyball, 1 scoreboard, & 3 score clips) from the office.  All equipment must be returned at the end of the season.

Format/Rosters

All leagues are co-ed. Team rosters typically range in size from 6-9 players. There are 6 players on the court (minimum of 2 females). Individual and small group registrants are combined to form full “Singles” teams that play together for the duration of the season. “Singles” teams will receive a team roster via email 2 days before their first game.

Single Opponent

Play one match per night, best of 5.  This format requires Team Captains to enter scores and bring equipment to games.

Double Opponent

Play two matches per night, best of 3.  This format has an Event Coordinator at the gym that plays on one of the teams and is responsible for entering scores and bringing equipment for the gym.

Schedules

Schedules will be posted to the website and emailed to participants no later than 2 days prior to their first game. Games will not be scheduled on long weekend Sundays, but may be scheduled on long weekend Mondays.

Day/Night

Calling the Shots

All players are expected to be on time, call their own fouls and abide by ESSC rules and polices. There is an Event Coordinator at the gym for Double Opponent Volleyball, but he or she is only there to run the gym, they are NOT responsible for making calls.  The Event Coordinator will enter the scores for all teams at their gym in Double Opponent Volleyball. Team Captains are responsible for entering the scores for their own teams for Single Opponent Volleyball.

Additional Information

Players Meetings: There are no players meetings for Double Opponent Indoor Volleyball leagues.  Please ensure you read the rules and policies thoroughly before the start of the season. Single Opponent Volleyball captains who haven't captained Single Opponent Volleyball in the past year, as well as individuals, will be required, depending on the season, to either complete an online Player Questionnaire or attend a Player's Meeting. This will be specified on the registration form.

Waiver: All players are expected to complete a waiver prior to playing in any ESSC league or event. One waiver per player, per season is sufficient. To complete the waiver, click here.

Reporting Scores: In Double Opponent leagues, you must report the score at your gym to the EC by writing it on the scoresheet. The EC will then submit the scores to the Club. In Single Opponent leagues, one player from each team, typically the captain, is responsible for reporting the game scores to the ESSC no later than 5:00pm the day after each game. Instructions on where and how to report scores can be found on the Player Info page.

Gym Permits: A permit must be brought to all gyms for each Volleyball game. For Double Opponent Volleyball – the Event Coordinator is responsible for bringing the permit to the gym.  For Single Opponent Volleyball, the Team Captain must bring the permit to the gym.  All permits will be provided to the Event Coordinators Team Captains.

Cancellation Policy: In order to receive a full refund, cancellations must be submitted 2 business days prior to the registration deadline applicable to that season. After this time, no player or team will be eligible for a full or partial refund or credit.

Default Policy for Team Registrations:
You agree to supply a $25/match default fee each time your team does not meet minimum player requirements at game time. If the default fee is not paid before the following week's matches, you will be given an automatic loss for those matches and for all matches thereafter until the fee is paid. If your team defaults a second week, your status in the league will be under review. The ESSC does not profit from default fees; any team defaulted against is automatically refunded the applicable default fee onto the credit card which was used to register the team.
