INDOOR SPORTS ONLINE MEETING NOTES
Floor Hockey, Basketball, Dodgeball, Volleyball, Badminton & Soccer
PLAYER'S MEETINGS:
For the Spring 2008 season, there will be no Player's Meeting's for indoor
sports.
It is still player's responsiblity to read through all rules, policies
and guidelines found on the website. Knowing information about your league
is very important.
GYMS:
About: The gyms are rented from the City
of Edmonton, Parks
and Recreation or are Private Facilities. Weekday start times (Monday
to Friday) may range from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Sunday start times will range from
8:00 AM to 10:00
PM. During the week you can expect most games to be scheduled for later
in the evening due early slots being reserved for youth activities. Please
see more below on ESSC expectations regarding school and/or private facility
use.
Permits: The ESSC has booked and paid for
each facility that is scheduled for a game. Please pay close attention
to the permit times on the schedule as we cannot be in the gym prior to
or after the rental agreement time. Expect the schools to be LOCKED
until 15 minutes prior to the start of your scheduled game time. If you
arrive early and the doors are locked, please wait outside until the caretaker
comes to unlock the door or until the Games Coordinator (GC) or Event
Coordinator (EC) arrives.
Treat The Facilities Right: All players MUST
respect the facilities, building property and the caretakers. Gym use
is a privilege that should not be taken lightly. Please be kind to the
caretakers in all circumstances and please treat the school as you would
want someone else to treat your home. Be patient! If you have any comments
about your school, please address them with the ESSC staff the following
day by sending an email to info@edmontonsportsclub.com .
THE CLUB RENTS FACILITIES WHICH MEANS THE FACILITY
STAFF MAY REVOKE OUR RENTAL PRIVILEDGES AT ANY TIME. Any player or team
who causes The Club to get a complaint may, and likely will be, removed
from the league immediately.
SCHEDULES, STANDINGS & GENERAL SPORT INFORMATION:
Schedules: The
schedule for your league will posted ~48 hours prior to your first
game. If the schedule is not yet posted, you may safely assume that
the schedule is not yet completed. Please be patient and be ready to
play on opening day!
Standings: Will
be posted within 48 hours of completion of your game.
Playoffs: The
playoff schedule will be posted on the website after the final regular
season games are completed, you will be emailed once these schedules are
completed and posted.

RULES, WAIVERS, DEFAULTS & SUBSTITUTE PLAYERS:
Your rules have been posted on the website. All
players must be know the rules before playing - NO EXCEPTIONS! If you
are a new team or new player to the league this is VERY important as our
rules are different from other leagues. The ESSC are self officiated
leagues; you are responsible for calling your own infractions.
Rules can be found on the website by going to the individual
sport information pages listed above, click on the RULES tab at the top
of the page.
Team
Shirts: All sports, with the exception
of volleyball and dodgeball, require each player
to bring a white and dark colored shirt to each game. Teams will decide
who is wearing what color at the gym. Players who do not have an appropriate
shirt color to match their teammates may be asked not to play by the GC
or the opposing captain. Teams are allowed to have a ‘team color’ but
should always bring a second shirt in the event your opponent has the
same ‘team color’.
Waivers: Have you submitted
your waiver yet? All players must submit a waiver before playing in
the ESSC league: http://edmontonsportsclub.com/register/waivers.shtml.
Even if you have played with the ESSC in previous seasons, you must submit
a waiver EACH season that you are active.
Defaults: The
ultimate in unsporting behaviour is to default!
Teams who default (no show, not enough players, late, etc) are charged
a $50 fee with each default. Teams who do not provide
the fee will be suspended from playing until the bond is paid and replaced
with another. Please see the rules for default score and default sportsmanship
ratings.
What does the ESSC
do with default fees it collects? The entire fee is refunded to the team
that was defaulted against.
Substitute Players: The ESSC feels that defaults should
be prevented whenever possible. Teams pay to PLAY! Therefore
the Edmonton Sport and Social Club encourages
teams to find substitute players to fill out their roster for a game.
Here are the ESSC guidelines for bringing in sub players:
1. A team may bring in subs that are not listed on
the roster. Subs must not have, at any time, played at a higher
skill level than the player(s) they are replacing.
2. All subs MUST sign the online waiver prior to playing. It is
the captain’s responsibility to make sure that this is done.
3. If you are playing in a league where
a game is being played before yours, you may only borrow players from
the previous game to prevent your team from defaulting. You can
not add players from a previous game if it increases the number of players
on the roster beyond a minimum number of players required to avoid defaulting
the game.
4. Teams may bring in subs for playoff games but these
players must have played during the regular season with the team.
There is one exception to this rule: Your team is going to
default due a lack of players. In this case new players will be
allowed to play but teams may only field a minimum roster to avoid defaulting.
a. It is each team’s responsibility to
NOT bring in ‘ringers’ – respect your opponent and the league
by making it a fair game!
5. A sub-list can be requested from
the office. Just email scores@edmontonsportsclub.com to
request a sub. If you recruit a sub, it is your responsibility to ensure
they are ready to play (know the rules and have submitted a waiver).
GAMES COORDINATORS (GC’s) & EVENT COORDINATORS (EC’S):
Games Coordinators: GC’s are ESSC employees. Their main role is to set-up
the facility so it is ready for game time, keep the score and time, and
report the results to the ESSC. They are also there to encourage
sportsmanlike play and to help to keep the games running smoothly. Players
must understand the role of the GC and know what is expected as a player
in the league. The following is a list of the roles that the GC will
perform during your game:
Pre-Game Intros - the GC will call in both captains for introductions, confirm
which colour each team is wearing, define any particular court/gym
rules, and provide league updates and other special notes.
Managing the Time - the GC will manage the game time on either a clock or their watch.
They will ensure that the game starts at the scheduled start time and
manage the time for the remainder of the game.
Keeping Score - the GC will keep track of the score.
Intermission - the GC will act as a 'mediator' for the captains during the intermission,
they will also provide feedback to both teams at this time.
Officiate – the GC will call fouls or penalties when
needed. The GC is NOT a referee, ESSC leagues are self-officiated leagues.
However the GC will assist in keeping the game under control by calling
infractions that are not called by the teams and by providing constructive
and positive feedback to the players throughout the game.
The GC will eject players who are a
threat to the fun or safety of their opponents - the GC is obligated
by the ESSC to step in and assign a game misconduct if warranted by
a player's actions. A GC cannot allow a player to continue who is jeopardizing
the safety or fun of other players. See the rules for more details.
In some cases a GC may not be present to monitor the game.
In these cases, the team captains are responsible for keeping time, keeping
score and making sure that their own players are playing within the guidelines
of the ESSC. The captains need to make sure that the ball is put away
in the correct location and to report the score of the game and the sportsmanship
ratings to the ESSC office the following day by noon. Phone: 429-4263 or Email: scores@edmontonsportsclub.com
Event Coordinators: At each volleyball
and badminton gym, there will be a ESSC player/volunteer called an Event
Coordinator (EC). This person is a registered player in the league. Their
main purpose is to bring playing equipment and a score sheet to the games,
update players with pre-game announcements and report the game scores
to the ESSC. Please help them with set-up and take-down and make sure
that you are helping them out by reporting your game scores to the scoresheet
they have provided. For more information on becoming an EC and its
benefits (….FREE PLAY!!!) see the JOBS section of the website at http://www.edmontonsportsclub.com/jobs/index.shtml
SPORTSMANSHIP POLICY:
Why is sportsmanship so important?
The ESSC emphasizes good sportsmanship before, during and after the games.
The reason this is important is that playing good sporting opponents and
being a good sport yourself make the game fun for everyone. Players,
who do not follow the rules, try to bend the rules, have intensity issues
and/or lack respect or courtesy are NOT fun to play. Every player who
chooses to play in the ESSC is asked to abide by ESSC sportsmanship policies.
There is very little tolerance for players or teams who are challenged
by them. Play fair and be nice to keep the game fun for everyone!
If you commit to understanding
your sport, its rules and the expectations surrounding sportsmanship;
not only will YOU have FUN but YOU will make the game FUN for those around
you!
Rating Your Opponent?
After each game teams
will rate their opponent on their sportsmanship (the exception being volleyball
teams). The rating is a combination of how well they followed the rules,
called their own infractions/fouls AND how much fun they were to play.
The GC will also rate both teams on their impression of those factors.
These ratings are combined and affect the standings. Please review your
league rules for more information on rating your opponent and the policy
regarding -1 ratings.
How Does Sportsmanship
Affect The Standings?
Sportsmanship is the
second criteria used to rank a team in their standings. The first criterion
is whether the team won, lost or tied the game, the second criterion is
cumulative sportsmanship points and thirdly, the points for/against differential.
In all of the really recreational and recreational leagues sportsmanship
ratings are combined with total points to determine standings. If tied
the next criteria looked at is points for and against.
Where can you find out more information
on the ESSC Sportsmanship Policy?
The ESSC Sportsmanship
Policy is listed in each individual sports rules section plus on each
sports information page as listed above. Any questions regarding the
sportsmanship policy can be forwarded to info@edmontonsportsclub.com .
How does the ESSC
acknowledge teams who are GREAT sports?
The ESSC started the
LADY BING SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD in Fall 2006. Teams who have been nominated
by their opponents or a GC are eligible to win the award. Tentative
prizing is Lady Bing shirts, preferred registration in an upcoming season
and your team’s name forever etched on a plaque and on the ESSC website.
