“I can’t believe a trip to the dump would be that exciting”…

Those were the words out of everyone’s mouths after the ESSC ‘s first annual field trip to the Edmonton Waste Management Facility, aka “The Center for Excellence”, a well deserved title.

Who knew that Edmonton was a WORLD leader in waste management. With a one-of-a-kind facility, we are doing things here with our waste that is years ahead of everyone else. From the recycling facility (known as “MeRF” – Materials Recovery Facility), to the massive composting warehouse,  it was simply amazing to see all of the projects working together. Combined, each form of waste management accounts for nearly 90% of all of Edmonton’s waste – all which is no longer being sent to the landfill.

Included in these efforts is a massive electronics disassembly program which breaks TV’s and Computers down to the smallest of wires for reusing and recycling, not to mention the mounds of cardboard milk cartons which get sent to Hong Kong where they are turned into toilet paper for re-sale.

In the near future, we will be taking another step forward when we launch “Chapter 7” which promises to turn sci-fi fantasy into reality: people powering their cars with household waste. The technology is here, and Edmonton is one of the first in the world to be using it! So be proud Edmonton, you’re helping keep the earth greener!

The ESSC is also doing it’s part to contribute to ‘Green’ initiatives. Among other things, our office recycles anything and everything that can be, we limit the use of paper products and we cut back on electricity by shutting off lights that are not in use. We continue to grow our efforts by meeting regularly to discuss new ideas and by keeping up with technology that makes it easier then ever to be GREEN! So join us in our efforts and feel good about the future of our planet!
