Skiers/Riders Off-Slope Training
Snow Bunnies listen up! If you want to make the most of your riding season this year you need to do some cross training. Training your legs, core, cardio, and balance off the slopes will improve your speed, control, and balance while riding, as well as help to prevent injuries.
ESSC Boot Camps are an excellent form of cross training. Classes are a circuit type workout that works your muscles and your lungs in an efficient fitness building class where you can work at your own pace.
Here are a few exercises that you can try at home or at the gym:

Head to Head - Skiing vs. Snowboarding
In light of our upcoming ski trip to Fernie, we decided it would only be right to "hash out" the age old question...skiing or snowboarding? Much like our participants, both have their fair share of pros and cons. What do you like?
|
Chris Says:
Some might argue that skiing is for old, rich people looking for mundane thrills. I say skiing is classic. It is like vinyl records, Super Mario or Led Zeppelin.
I started skiing when I was about 4 years old and at that time you either skied or you didn’t, there was no choice between that and boarding. I will admit that skiing went out of vogue in the mid 90’s when snowboards became all the rage
but I refused to give it up and start from scratch with a snowboard. It took a few years but with the advent of twin tipped skis and terrain parks, skiing has re-established its awesomeness. Anywhere you can go on a snowboard you can go on skis.
Need some more convincing:
1. Skiers do not have to constantly do their bindings up every time that they take a lift up the hill clogging up the
dismount area.
2. Newbie Skiers don’t scrape off all the good snow from the hill leaving an icy trail in their wake like boarders.
3. Moguls. It just isn’t the same on a board, and moguls often cover some of the best runs on a mountain.

Paul Says:

Snowboard. Skiing is for old, rich people looking for mundane thrills. I say snowboarding is epic. It's like World Peace, winning a game of Risk (which I realize is the opposite of world peace, but is still quite epic), or super volcanoes (also very epic and unlike world peace). But allow me to digress:
I didn't start going to ski hills until I was 16. I have never actually tried skiing. Something about the clunky boots and multiple pieces of equipment dangling from my feet and hands just didn't seem right for me. That being said, my friends who ski have, on many occasions, made me look silly with the amount of skill they have on the mountain. I suppose I just like the dynamic of snowboarding; it takes a bit more effort and stability to ultimately reach the same endpoint, it's a great workout, and all of your friends will think you're cool if you have a fun stomp pad.
And, not that you need any more convincing:
1. Coming down the mountain sideways, snowboarders appear much thinner than skiers. Deception is everything.
2. There is nothing more satisfying than purposefully scraping all of the good snow off of the mountain when stopping.
3. Moguls: Designed primarily for the skiing populace, moguls are most likely a surprise place for the snowboarder to take a sweet tumble, but are best treated as mini-jumps. How fun!
