Good Things To Know...

Not going on vacation anytime soon? Stuck in Edmonton experiencing unpredictable weather? Well, make the best of it! Here are some important ESSC league policies to help you have your best season yet.

Facilities Policy: The ESSC could not exist without the opportunity to use facilities within Edmonton and its importance cannot be underestimated. So let's not screw this up, people! Facilities Policy.

Alcohol Policy: It's not cool to drink at the school! Seriously. We will find out who you are, fine your team and eject all of your teammates from the ESSC (regardless of whether or not they were participating in the drinking). Save it for the Sponsor Bars!

Sportsmanship Policy:
In each game we encourage our players to strive to reach our motto; “Fun First, Winning Second,” however, we do run into sportsmanship issues that must be handled. It is encouraged that you read and understand our Sportsmanship Policy.

What not to do...

Bon Voyage

5 Ways to Feel Like You're on Vacation
5 Things You Should Never do on Vacation
1.) Get a healthy sun-kissed glow – but avoid looking like an Oompa Loompa.

2.) Change your work desktop background to somewhere you’d rather be.

3.) Eat whatever you want…guilt-free!

1.) Work – leave behind your laptop, crackberry, etc.

2.) Miss an ESSC league game without letting your captain know  or without finding a sub.

4.) Drink pina coladas throughout the day (EXCEPT at any of our gym facilities or you will be hunted down and punished!)

5.) ‘Brighten’ your playlist. A couple of my personal suggestions are Summer Lovin’, Surfin USA and Summergirls (yes, by LFO).

  3.) Pee in the pool.

4.) Order ‘iced tea’ in the states – it can be really gross.

5.) Wear a Speedo – there is no circumstance in which this is a good decision.

Packing Tips and Tricks

  • Gather together everything you think you'll need and then get rid of half of it. Do not bring things just because they might come in handy.
  • Rolling your clothes may allow you to fit more in while reducing wrinkles.
  • When traveling with another person, do not put all of your clothes in one suitcase, that way if one of the suitcases gets lost, you will still have some items.
  • Empty a little product from full plastic bottles. Squeeze the bottle slightly then place the cap on. This allows the contents to expand in flight without letting the contents ooze out. Put them in zip-lock bags just in case.
  • For cooler weather travelers: layering clothes is more effective than hauling around bulky sweaters or coats.

Head to Head - Best Vacation Ever

Vacation is what motivates you to get out of bed on Mondays, drags your behind to the gym in the evenings, and most importantly, provides you with a topic to bring up to avoid awkward social situations! This week, our participants battle over two border countries... Costa Rica and Panama.

Amanda Says: Costa Rica

We found this Costa Rica trip at a College Career Fair. Next thing I knew 6 of us friends were on our way to Costa Rica.  The people in Costa Rica are very chill and relaxed. They base their lives on the saying Pura Vida, meaning  “this is the life!” The people were very patient with our non-Spanish speaking skills.  Every day it was 45 degrees Celsius. We traveled from Liberia, to Playa Tamarindo and then to Playa Guiones trying to learn how to surf.   One of the best memories from Costa Rica would have to be the sun set BOOZE cruise. Basically, you pay 60 dollars to go on this cruise ship and you get all you can drink (alcohol) from 12pm until sun set. We rural Albertan girls out-drank everyone on the cruise ship. I have never drank so much tequila in my life.  We used our Spanish skills saying “UNO CERVAIS POR FAVOR.” While on this booze cruise we went scuba diving, let’s just say its not the best idea to swim in the ocean while intoxicated. One of the coolest things about Costa Rica was their breathtaking sun sets!  You can’t even find words to describe these sunsets.

Jason Says: Panama

Panama is what Costa Rica was 20 years ago… untapped. You still have rivers, lakes, and jungles that are not flooded with “Gringos”, and average Joe’s in search of a pseudo cultural experience. Enter zip lining. Everyone’s done it in Mexico, can’t find a place not to do it in Costa Rica…unheard of in Panama. Instead, spend your days mingling with the indigenous people of the Kuna Yala; an archipelago consisting of sand, fish, and absolutely no amenities. See picture above. Night time consists of missions such as hiking to the summit of Volcan Baru; Panama’s highest peak where at dusk, for about two minutes, both oceans appear before you, only to be taken away by a blanket of thick clouds. Sticking with the theme of simplicity, Panama's accepted currency is American dollars. The simplicity of this is offset by the server you are attempting to place your order with, who, unlike their Costa Rican counterpart, will not be able to speak a lick of English. Realities such as these only add to the feeling of authenticity you are unable to escape. PA-NA-MA-HA!

Sidenote: I actually love Costa Ricans and their country.

Cleaning Service Required

The ESSC is currently looking for a team of 1-2 individuals to perform general cleaning tasks in the ESSC office every three weeks. The projected job time is 2-3 hours per visit. Interested individuals may contact lori@edmontonsportsclub.com for more details.

Saville Parking Notice

As we use Saville for a number of our leagues we wanted to clarify the parking situation there:

There are two parking lots accessible to all Saville patrons; the farther south lot is a PAID lot only – anyone can park there but parking must be paid for regardless of if you are accessing Saville. The second lot (the more northern lot) is free for Saville patrons but you must register your car at the front desk upon entry.

Thursday February 4th - Parking will be limited due to an olympic curling sendoff event. It is recommended that players park at Foote Field or use public transit on this date.
