The Urban Beach Volleyball tournament was a small but enjoyable event played at the Garneau Beach Courts on July 26. Split up between two divisions of four aside and one division of six aside, teams played four games apiece through some spectacular weather. Team Scooch ran the table on their way to the championship of the C division, Sun of a Beach destroyed the competition on their way to the championship of the B division, and Bumpin Bricks used their mastery of the jump serve to win the championship of the A division. The wrap up party at Hudsons was well attended, as the staff put on specials for the infamous mini burgers and pitchers of Sleeman’s!

In the Spring 2008 season Hudsons stepped up to help reward teams who demonstrated great sportsmanship in our leagues. Each week one of the teams who was nominated for a Lady Bing Award by their peers was awarded a $100 tab for Hudsons to use however they wanted and crowned as our team of the week. Along with this newfound fortune the winning team will be featured in the scoreboard with their team picture and bio.

To top it off all weekly team of the week winners were entered into a grand prize draw at the Season End Party where the runner up received $100 more in gift certificates and the Grand Prize winner got custom t-shirts made for their team.

How do I get nominated?
There is no sure fire way to get a nomination for a Lady Bing, but any team that you play could be the one to give you that vote. These are just a few areas to focus on to be a worthy Lady Bing Candidate

1. Be respectful of the other team
2. Have fun and make sure your opponent is having a good time too, regardless of who is winning
3. Know the rules - go to the game informed so you are more able to avoid breaking the rules or taking penalties
4. Be honest and accountable
5. Cheer
6. Buy the opposing team a beer at the nearest sponsor bar after the game.

In the Spring 2008 season we had 70 teams nominated for Lady Bing awards, lets keep up the great work through the Summer. To nominate a great, sportsmanlike team click here.

Player Liaison Update

Hello players!
You’ll be happy to know that I’ve been furiously scouting soccer and slo-pitch fields hoping to find newer and better fields for you to play on. Since my last update I’ve scouted 25+ soccer fields and a dozen or so slo-pitch fields in all 4 quadrants of the city. Hopefully we can get some of the better ones on the schedule for you soon. I’m also revisiting fields that we currently use and lining them with fresh paint. As well, I'll be visiting some of your games in the next few weeks, just checking in to see how things are going. If you see me, please say hi!

In an un-related note (and because Chris wants me to write more) I saw the new Batman movie and have to say I was a little disappointed after hearing so many good things. (Warning may contain some plot elements) I mean really, how does Two-Face talk with only half a mouth? Also, why did the Joker burn all that money? I mean COME ON! And how did Batman save Rachel when she was pushed off the 30-story building by grabbing her in mid-air and then cushioning their fall with a parked car. I don’t know about you, Batman, but I probably would have needed an ambulance ride after a fall of that magnitude. The moral of the story? Keep your expectations low and you’ll never be disappointed!

Anyways, I hope you’ll enjoy the new fields, and I hope to see you soon. And remember, in the worlds of Hal and Joanne, “keep fit and have fun!”

Attention Slo-Pitch Players

With the Slo-Pitch season well under way, there is no better extracurricular team bonding experience than the upcoming ESSC Sleeman Slo-Pitch Tournament and beer gardens. It is also a great chance to play ball for those of us whose Summers get too hectic to try and make it to games every week. We still have room for teams, whether you have been playing together for years or are just looking to throw on a glove for the weekend and enjoy a few refreshments there is a division for you. The event is running August 9-10th at John Fry Park.

The ESSC is also offering a 5 week Fall Slo-Pitch Season (as well as Soccer, Flag Football and Ultimate) on Sundays this September.

Keep in mind when registering for the upcoming tournament or for the Fall season the importance of finding a perfect team name for your crew it can be the hardest part of registering. A great name can strike fear into your opponents, or in most cases break the ice with a bit of laughter. So we have decided to compile a Hot and Not list for Slo-pitch team names for 2008.

Hot (Unique and clever names that have caught our attention)
1. Jeters Never Prosper
2. Smack My Pitch Up
3. Ace of 3rd Base
4. It Byrnes
5. Wicked Pitch of the West

Not (These names have been used and abused, do yourself a favour and pick something fresh)
1. Balls Deep
2. Ramrod
3. Jager Bombers
4. Masterbatters
5. Swingers

The ESSC's newest contest asks our players: How have you helped to get the word out? The ESSC just started out in 2004 and since then we have grown to host over 450 teams in 11 different activities. Alot of that success can be attributed to our great, loyal players. Now it is our chance to pay you back. We will be handing out prizes each month for the most creative recruitment methods. It doesn't have to be elaborate and can be as simple as starting a team Facebook group or proudly wearing a league champ shirt. Just tell us your story and you will be entered into the contest for your chance to win. Click here to enter.
