Team of the Week
Sponsored by The Canadian Brewhouse
The ESSC Team of the Week program is all about recognizing teams that are dedicated to positive sportsmanship and playing with a fun-first mentality.
How it works: Each week throughout the season the ESSC will recognize one team for their positive attitude and great sporting behavior. To be eligible, teams must first be nominated for the Lady Bing Award in a given season. All nominated teams will then have a chance to submit a photo and a short biography in order to be eligible for a Team of the Week Prize.
Prize: Each Team of the Week winner will receive a $100 gift card to The Canadian Brewhouse and will be recognized on social media.
You can help us recognize great sportsmanship by nominating a team for the Lady Bing Award. Click here to nominate a team!

![]() The Snails
Captain: Steve Hughes
|
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Outdoor Soccer The Snails have been playing with the ESSC since 2015, with some players having played with the ESSC since 2010. We love that the ESSC provides a laid back, co-ed league so we can play with friends and partners in a just-for-fun environment, and one of our favourite things has been watching beginner soccer players improve to become some of the best players on our team.

![]() Motion to Strikeouts
Captain: Daniel Vassberg
|
Night/Div/Sport: Tuesday Recreational Slo-Pitch We’re the Motion to Strikeouts, a reference to the fact that the team is almost entirely composed of lawyers in the public service (except for Scott, our resident “Man of Industry” and nefarious capitalist), as well as a reference to the obscene number of times our members strike out. Two birds - one stone, as they say. Although we’d need hundreds of stones to kill two birds, as we can’t aim a throw either. But I digress. This is our first season playing ESSC Rookie slo-pitch, but many of us are also in our third season of ESSC soccer (as the Motion to Strikers, with a flawless 0-18-2 record). The group really enjoys the social aspect of slo-pitch, and looks forward to finishing the season strong (or weak, we’re not picky).

![]() ER Toe Taggers
Captain: Leanne Ball
|
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Dodgeball History: Our team is the ER Toe Taggers. We are all either doctors or nurses that work at the Grey Nuns emergency department. Our job and work environment is high stress and demanding, which is why we are so happy to come and play dodgeball, even if we lose every game! Playing dodgeball once a week has definitely helped boost the morale in our work environment which was very low through the pandemic. We have played dodgeball for 3 seasons and will switch to slow pitch in the summer. I’m sure we I’ll continue to play dodgeball next winter to keep up our spirits in our professional and personal lives. Woohooo!!! |

![]() Smish Smash
Captain: Katie MacIsaac
|
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Badminton History: My name is Katie (I’m the one in the purple t-shirt) and my teammate/wife/better-half is Alex (she’s the one in the Oilers t-shirt). Our team name is Smish Smash and the origin of it is that it was the first thing that came to Alex’s mind and we thought it sounded silly! This is our first season with ESSC and we’re loving it so far! Our favourite aspect of badminton is that despite being really bad at it, it’s still so much fun to hit the birdie and get a good rally going! |

Night/Div/Sport: Wednesday Recreational Ball Hockey History: Our team name is the ‘ABC Blues’ with the ‘ABC’ standing for Alberta Blue Cross. We joined the ESSC Ball Hockey League in 2019 as a corporate team/wellness initiative that includes Alberta Blue Cross employees, family and friends. We have played 7 seasons with the ESSC and look forward to many more in the future. Our ‘ABC Blues’ have enjoyed our time with the ESSC knowing that we are getting some exercise while having fun win or lose. As a Team, we have embraced sportsmanship and fair play which makes this Lady Bing Nomination a proud honor. |

![]() Setters of Catan
Captain: Olivier Hamel
|
Night/Div/Sport: Wednesday Recreational Volleyball History: We have been playing ESSC indoor and beach volleyball for over ten years now and really enjoy the league. We are a competitive group but put the emphasis on having fun first and enjoy socializing at the sponsor bars after games. After running out of innuendos for team names, the name came together as a pun on a popular board game (Settlers of Catan) some of the original team members played back in the early days of the team (yes probably the nerdiest name out there, but it has stuck and works for us). Here is the Roster from these past few seasons, from left to right on the photo:
Trevor is probably our most competitive player and loves spiking the ball while maintaining a cat-like agility to avoid stepping under the net Graeme, or Grimey as he likes to be called, plays with energy and also acts as the team jester in many ways, always looking for a humorous twist on situations Oli is the team captain and the glue that has brought everyone together over time, and brings the team back together season after season Kristin has been a consistent setter for the team and leads by example on the court with her creative plays and determination on every ball Lauren has recently come back from a "mat leave" after having her daughter and always manages to bring her smile to the court, and keep it even when she loses feeling in her feet in the wet cold sand of spring beach volleyball Steve was initially known to the group as "Kristin's husband" but after bailing the team out last minute so many times as a sub he seamlessly became a regular member of the team. |

![]() Don't Neglect the Balls
Captain: Bill Wolfe
|
Night/Div/Sport: Tuesday Recreational Dodgeball History: Our team Don't Neglect the Balls has been playing for about 13 years. Our average age is getting up there but our immaturity holds fast at 19. We all are there to have fun first and be as fun contagious to the other team as possible. The lady Bing is a badge of honnor if we win. We always try to have a good connection with the GC it only makes it more fun when they are enjoying the game play as well. The photo is only part of our team but only the really exhausted ones. |

![]() The Big Dill
Captain: Abby Eliasson
|
Night/Div/Sport: Thursday Recreational PickleBall History: We are Marianne and Abby, a mother-daughter team, who play pickleball together. Our team name The Big Dill came from the fact that "we are kind of a BIG deal" LOL and it ties into the pickleball theme. We started playing pickleball the summer of 2022 and we had a blast so we signed up for ESSC in the fall and the rest is history. Our favorite aspects of the game is that it is a sport you can continue playing later into life, learning the strategy of the pickleball game and most of being able to play together for some good quality time:) . Sportsmanship is extremely important to us in any sport we play and just getting the nomination is fantastic! |

|
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Bowling History: Strike First came from the recent reboot of the Karate Kid called “Cobra Kai”. Found it fitting for our bowling team to “Strike Report”, Striking pins and not people. The is our first season playing ESSC, but we are really enjoying how it gives us a night out and a chance to meet and play against other teams. |

![]() Swish Mello
Captain: Mandy Bohaichuk
|
Night/Div/Sport: Tuesday Recreational Basketball History: Our story probably began the same as most do. We started out as individuals from seemingly different worlds that life would not normally throw together but through random chance and common appreciation of sport we ended up together. A good core of this team has been together for 15 years. We started when we were just in our prime with seemingly no direction contrasted with now where we're in the early stages of family and fully invested in our careers. As the league reopened after the pause it seemed in a flash of light a lifetime had passed. So, when the call was made to assemble the team it was hard to ignore. Some of us were tempted to play because of some cling-on to past glory, try to be healthier or undo some other burn-out thing. Collectively, we have about 500 seasons with the ESSC. Our name has changed over the and we feel we've seen it all. Been every team. Home and away. Young and old. Favored and under-dog. And everything in between. Unfortunately, we our entering the final arc of our story and have oddly gone where most have not. Father-time is undefeated. He has all the t-shirts. Our experience with the league has been long and prosperous. I am, we are, we all are... Swish Mello.

We pride ourselves on having fun and have definitely developed into a family over the years. We may only usually win a couple of games a season but we've definitely improved over the years and can also provide some stiff competition out there :). We love going for beers together after the game and definitely enjoy playing together every Monday night. |

![]() No Regretzkys
Captain: Nicole Pux
|
Night/Div/Sport: Thursday Recreational Ball Hockey History: The winter of 2023 marks the 5th ball hockey season for the “No Regretzkys” who began playing in the ESSC league in October of 2021. As an individual’s team, the No Regretzkys started out as the “Red Vines” which is how they ended up keeping their currently worn Red team colors. At the start of their 3rd season with the league, the team adopted the No Regretzkys team name following a vote on possible replacement names over the teams WhatsApp chat. A few members have been added along the way, but for the most part all of the original players from the 2021 individuals team remain today! Initially Captained by Graham Pendray for three seasons, Nicole Pux took the reigns as Captain in 2022. The team is rounded out by founding members Nick, Julie, Chris, Jenna, Jessica, and Troy, as well as recent additions Danielle, Joe, Dan, Jordan, Taylor and goaltender Ethan who have joined along the way. With such a diverse range in skill level and past experience across the team, there is probably no one single aspect of ball hockey which the team as a whole would call it’s favorite. It’s probably more the comradery, that feeling of belonging to a team, and simply being able to suit up week after week with like minded friends which keeps everyone coming back season after season. The No Regretzskys have fully embraced and adopted the ‘fun first’ attitude, and while the team still chases an actual league champs title, the friendships that have been created between what were once complete strangers, has proven more valuable than any trophy.

Balls To The Walls
Captain:Laura Nielsen
|
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Multi Sport History: In the Fall of 2022 “Balls to the Walls” was formed. It began on a Wednesday, “Wine Wednesday” to be exact. Five friends got together and decided that they should play “sports”, “it would be funny.” We conned our significant others into joining us and so began the most epic dance filled sports team to be found. We love laughing as we attempt a new sport and cheering each other on for the simplest of victories. Cheers to hitting every Ball at the Wall and not even close to the target area. We may not be number 1, but if losses were a win we would definitely take home that trophy! |

Soccer Sloths
Captain:Janelle Aldrich
|
Night/Div/Sport: Thursday Recreational Turf Soccer History: Origin of our team’s name: Sloths are very majestic creatures that are often misunderstood because of how slow and antisocial they are. Well, everyone’s perception of them was wrong. We are giving them the speed and socialization they’re often criticized for lacking. Take your average sloth and throw some soccer balls and friends in the mix and you have us… The Soccer Sloths!
Favorite aspect of the sport you play: Our team loves coming together and strategizing at the beginning of the game then reorganizing at half to see where we are making errors. We are very competitive but understand that losing or having an off game is part of the sport. We enjoy calling out great plays with our team members, as well as the opposing teams.
How many seasons your team has played with the ESSC: The Sloths have played 5 seasons of soccer with the essc and plan on continuing. :)

![]() Featherless Bipeds
Captain:Matthew Yanish
|
Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Slo-Pitch History: This is technically the second season for the Featherless Bipeds, as we played in the 16 week season right before this. We are largely a team of people who have not played before, or only played a couple of seasons themselves. We really love slo-pitch for the social aspect, and there are so many people on the team from various aspects of my life; it's really cool to see everyone brought together by sport! There are people I know from other teams, school, various workplaces, and friends-of-friends who joined the team. Lastly, if you're wondering what the heck a "Featherless Biped" is, the term is a reference to an unsatisfactory definition of a human being from an old Socratic dialogue. Basically, someone says that a human being is simply a featherless thing that walks on two feet (aka a biped) and some cynic holds up a plucked chicken and says "behold, a man!" to prove his point that a man is more than simply being featherless and walking on two feet. Anyways, that's the nerdy name, and that's our team! |

Captain: Carlos Palma |
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Slo-Pitch History: At the start of 2022, Team Captains Kole “The Rooster” Visser and Carlos “The Snake” Palma decided to gather a bunch of co-workers from Laser City Edmonton. We, alongside some fantastic friends, came together to create the 2 Laser 2 Tag Slo Pitch team. While a few members such as Taylor “The Bull” Blanchard have been a part of the ESSC in the past, we are excited to admit that for most of our awesome team, this is our first season playing together. We are very grateful for the opportunity to work together, as it has brought us closer and created a lot of great laughs! Working with team members such as Janet “The Bullet” Haslam, Renand “The Gamemaster” Fulgueras and Kaylah “The logistics” Steinhaur have been an absolute pleasure. Creating and sharing these memories with friends has definitely been a highlight of this ESSC experience and we can’t wait to share them with the other teams soon!

![]() The Flighting Gazelles
Captain: Taylor Niezen |
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Ball Hockey History: The team was clumsily conceived in the darkest hours of a hot and sticky August night. The Founding Members discovered that their pints had been finished and wondered where it all went wrong. That fateful night, the Captain and Husband birthed the team by mistake, registering a group of ragtag individuals for ball hockey instead of tiddlywinks. A near-mythic opening game, in a rocky first season, sparked a legacy of hard-nosed but fair play and provided a name for these spindly but tough athletes – The Fighting Gazelles.

Night/Div/Sport: Wednesday Recreational Slo-Pitch History: Our team is made up of mostly nurses and doctors. We work at the Grey Nuns Emergency department, and we have played together for 7 years, while taking 2020 summer off due to covid. Our favorite part of playing is being able to enjoy spending time together away from work, blow off some steam, have fun together and rebuild some morale. Our team name is a bit of a dark joke, a play on words from using bag tags at work and tagging people out by their toe at the game.

![]() Batman Beyond
Captain: Michael Wong |
Night/Div/Sport: Friday Recreational Turf Soccer History: Our team had played in the ESSC for quite a few year and we were formally, “The Dark Knights”, but as life went on, players on our team changed to Life, Work, other commitments and such. Along the way we made new life long friends and comrades and formed the new Batman Beyond team, a new generation of Bat people. Our team is a tight knit group of players who love playing soccer, having fun, having drinks after the game and overall enjoying spending time with each other. I can’t be more proud of this team, and couldn’t be happier playing with such an excellent group of friends. We Love the ESSC!!!!

Night/Div/Sport: Thursday Recreational Slo-Pitch We are team Diplomaticos. We get our name from a famous (and excellent) Venezuelan rum. Our team started as a bunch of Venezuelan players that just wanted to have some fun, but quickly transformed into a diverse group that enjoys spending time together while playing ball. We all love baseball and have been playing in the ESSC every year since Fall 2017. The good spirit and special vibes in the team are our best quality. |

Turtle
Captain: Luke Lunde
|
Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Outdoor Soccer Turtle is a team consisting of a grand group of friends, all connected through a deep and profound question: "Hey you guys wanna play soccer together?" The name "Turtle" was also decided upon for an equally deep and profound reason; we thought it sounded cute and it gave us an excuse to make pretty tie-dyed shirts. Though many of us have played in ESSC before, this is Turtle's first season together. Our current roster is as follows: (From left to right) Top Row: Daniela, Kaitlyn, Kendall, Ashley, Meghan, Sophie, Annika, Laurel, Lauryn. Bottom Row: Nick, Luke, Scott, Lukas, Devan. Not Shown: Brandon. The main value of our team is that regardless of skill level, everyone on the team is equal. We play for the joy of getting to play soccer with our friends, and we all improve together as a team each game. |

Slider Inside
Captain: Shane Chetty
|
Night/Div/Sport: Tuesday Recreational Slo-Pitch The team we rep is SLIDER INSIDE, Slo Pitch is the game its our ride or die. Our name came from getting down and being a little gritty too. We got Big Daddy, Smalls, the Chopper, and thats only a small taste of the crew! We started out not knowing one another or how this was going to turn out to be, but now theres only one word to use thats family. We got 27 seasons under our belts, its for the love of the game that we show up and endure these bruises and welts. We always want to go and get that W its the dream, but what we truly value is good competition and kicking it with all the other teams. Well enough with all this chit chat we got a game to play, Y’all better turn up, cause thats the Slider Inside way!

Cash Me Offside
Captain: Rudy Janvier
|
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Outdoor Soccer Originally called Shake and Bake, Cash Me Offside formed from a group of car enthusiasts turned soccer players in the year of 2016. Our current roster is a rotating cast of characters from the original incarnation of Shake and Bake and subs turned into permanent players who just want to chase a ball around with friends. Our jerseys feature an image of Bhad Bhabie saying "How Bout Dat" on the back and we begin each game yelling "Cash me Offside!" "How Bout Dat" while thrusting our fists through a ring created by one player's arms. Unlike the stale meme we pull our name from, we like to keep it fun and energetic out on the pitch. |

Pop Flies Chicken
Captain: Janine Woo
|
Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Slo-Pitch Pop Flies Chicken is named after the great Popeyes Chicken and represents our team's love of the important things… like fried chicken. Remember when the Blue Jays celebrated sweeping the Yankees with a Korean Fried Chicken Party? That’s basically us every week just with more beers and we probably didn’t win any games. Regardless of the outcome, we are physically incapable of not high-fiving after every inning, and even when we are down by 20, you’ll still never stop hearing us make jokes with each other in the outfield. |

Scared Hitless
Captain: Savannah Dowell
|
Night/Div/Sport: Thursday Recreational Dodgeball We are Scared Hitless! We used to be Sour Patch Children but really we were a Sour Patch Family so we changed our names to represent us better, scared and hit little to no people.... BUT we do so with a smile on our face and drinks in our stomachs immediately after to forget our incredible loses. On our team we have nine amazing individuals: Splitz, Knee pads, Crazy Legs, Beef, Oh no no, Goalie, Father, New Guy, and El Presidente. Our names were given to us by other members of our team based on our playing style. We are a new team collectively and have been playing together for two seasons but we love Dodgeball because of the opportunity to have fun, meet new people, gain crazy skills, and most of all see how quickly the other teams can defeat us! We will see you on the courts and in our Hearts ❤️ |

Caged Birdies
Captain: Lorrie Makepeace
|
Night/Div/Sport: Tuesday Recreational Badminton Player names or nicknames: Lorrie and Ev The origin of your team’s name: Caged Birdies comes from the Maya Angelou poem "The Caged Bird Sings" Although we have screamed and laughed during games but never have we sung as of yet. How many seasons your team has played with the ESSC: first season at badminton and love it!!! Favorite aspect of the sport you play: The other teams have all been great fun! Anything else you want to include: I hope that more people will get out and play and not worry about the competitive aspect of the game. Although some teams are more competitive than others, we have found that our attitude of fun first helps set the stage before the game even begins. |

![]() Crazy Eagles
Captain: Radmila Djurisic
|
Night/Div/Sport: Thursday Intermediate Indoor Volleyball History: We are group of volleyball fans, who are trying to play the game and at the same time have as much fun as possible. So why call us the “Crazy Eagles”? Coming from the Serbian community where The White Eagle is a national symbol, we decided to identify ourselves with this in a bit of a changed way. The white color sometimes identifies “white hair” which we'd like to avoid so “Crazy” was much more appropriate, we hope. This is not far from the truth since you have to be a bit crazy to play such an intensive but beautiful game like volleyball at our age. We've been around as a team for 3 years and don’t plan on slowing down soon. Bonding together as a team as well as meeting other players on the other side of the net is a great way to spend a few hours per week. Add the recreational aspect of it and you have a 'win-win' situation. If we are able to spill a bit of laughter and fun under the net, that is a bonus which is priceless. Captain: Randy Knodel
|
Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Outdoor Soccer History: The Mia Hamm-sters, a group of casual individuals that has evolved to a team with a united goal – show up and have a good time. While not the most victorious, we are the most relaxed, easy going group on any ESSC pitch. We share some laughs and bevvies, all the while trying not to embarrass ourselves too much. |

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational A Ball Hockey History: ESSC brought us together and we are grateful for the friendships it has created. With the Covid situation this year, being able to play ball hockey and see our teammates has been really important to us. We wanted to share this quote from Dan O'Brien. “The Spirit of Sports: The spirit of sports gives each of us who participate an opportunity to be creative. Sports knows no sex, age, race or religion. Sports gives us all the ability to test ourselves mentally, physically and emotionally in a way no other aspect of life can. For many of us who struggle with ‘fitting in’ or our identity – sports gives us our first face of confidence. That first bit of confidence can be a gateway to many other great things!” |

Captain: Ceilahrose Go
|
Night/Div/Sport: Wednesday Recreational Indoor Volleyball History: Our team name “Distink” is just a twist in spelling but we derived it from the meaning “recognizably different”. Each team member has their own uniqueness and skills that make our team as a whole and play as ONE. Our group has been with ESSC for 4 years now, and each game we play fills up the gap in our lives that eliminate stress, tension, and any negativity. Along with this, we have acquired new friends that become family and developed bonding that helps us get through tough times. More power to ESSC! |

Captain: Nathan Achtemichuk
|
Night/Div/Sport: Tuesday Recreational Slo-Pitch History: Most of our team, Big Sticks Little Mitts, has been around since 2013. While grinding away and learning to play as a team for many seasons, we've taken our share of spankings and missed balls, but have never stopped having fun. In 2017, we received a generous sponsorship from CDC Real Property Appraisals (www.cdcincca). As a result, we were able to do a complete aesthetic overhaul. We changed our name to Big Sticks Little Mitts with a new logo showcasing our local Edmonton roots, including the new bridge and the city skyscape as a background. It must have paid off as that was the year we also won our first championship. Seven years later, with most of our team in their 40s, we are still determined to win, but most of all to continue to have fun, bond, and share our weekly laughs. Thank you for the nomination for the Lady Bing Award! |

![]() Flash Backs
Captain: Bill Donlevy
|
Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Slo-Pitch History: Our first foray with ESSC was a fall slopitch league years ago… The Bushmasters. It was, shall we say, less than successful. We froze our Grey Dots off to an 0-8 record. But, we re-emerged as a force to be reckoned with as The Psychedelic Psycho Seniors, winning divisional championships three times. Reinvigorated in 2019 as The Flashbacks (our current group), we are, this year, playing against the “kids” again, on Premium diamonds, instead of the thistle-ridden “not-so-premium” diamonds of yore. The name “Flashbacks” references the good old days of jukeboxes, Detroit iron and (perhaps) a little psychedelic adventuring. Now, in 2020, our team, pictured below, includes hot-shots and a ride-along (that’d be me), and I’ll introduce them: top left we have Ron “Iceman” Heck, dead-pull hitter and NHL superstar; Justin “Wall-Banger” Shepard, all-star shortstop; Brian “Hot-Sox” St Pierre, centre field flash; Danny “Captain Crunch” Ruesch, solid defender of the grassy knoll; Rick “Racetrack” Patry, pitcher and pinpoint hitter; Caine “Thighsmacker” Sernes, power hitter and a 65 degree field coverage on defence; Ron “Scoop” Sernes, red-hot shortstop and 3rd baseman; [lower left], Sue “Knuckleball” Shave, ace pitcher; Sonia “Memphis” Braun, right fielder and thistle picker; Colleen “Heartbreak” Hart, 2nd base/RF; Georgette “The Minder” Patry, deadly 2nd base rally-killer and baker of goodies; and me, Bill Donlevy, ball chaser. The best part of the game is competing with young teams and pushing ourselves to the limit… |

![]() Girls, Gays, and Chris
Captain: Sabrina Brady
|
Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Beach Volleyball History: Girls, Gays, and Chris, is a group of friends who decided volleyball would be a great way to keep in touch and stay active!!! Formerly the team was named, Team Unpredictable, however, while playing a game many years ago, we realized Chris was our token hetero male. This realization led to a name change, and we became known as Girls, Gays, and Chris! Today, the team has many “Chris’s” including: Ginger Chris, Definitely Not Chris, Indecisive Chris, Potentially Chris, Topography Chris, Hungry Chris, “Cute/Funny” Chris, and Musical Chris. We love our Monday night volleyballs and all the laughs, probably at Chris’s expense. |

Captain: Gina Duong
|
Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Slo-Pitch History: The team PS is a group of glorious ladies and gentlemen got together several years ago with a common goal of winning champion t-shirts. Only after 1 season we quickly found how much fun essc co-ed slopitch is, and over the seasons, the less we cared about winning t-shirts the more it became about just having a good time. These days we still have the goal to fill a closet with champion t-shirts but come for the overwhelming welcoming environment that follows with a great time. |

![]() Slapnut Magoos
Captain: Dylan du Cloux
|
Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Slo-Pitch History: We are the Slapnut Magoos. We have no idea what our name means, where our jersey idea came from, or even how to play slo-pitch. But after several losing seasons, we still show up every week to have some beverages and get struck out. We are a laid back group and fully believe that there’s nothing worth crying over (other than spilt beer) so the teams that can chirp our lack of skill better than we chirp ourselves are our favourite teams to play against! |

Captain: John Gregory
|
Night/Div/Sport: Thursday Recreational Turf Soccer History: Surf and Turf are an individuals team, who have quickly bonded to have fun while playing soccer with ESSC. We come from different backgrounds. We have found out about CN trains try to stop bears getting run over, how teaching is going in schools and how international students are recruited. This is are first of what will hopefully be many seasons with ESSC. |
