Lay Off! Only Layups. Why There is No Dunking in SSC Leagues

While the NCAA temporarily banned the Slam Dunk back in 1967 as they felt “it was not a skillful shot,” despite being such a crowd pleaser, the SSC has a few different reasons for banning this kind of shot from our leagues.

First and foremost, we want to eliminate the possibility of injury as much as we can, and as impressive as it is to watch your teammate jump over the head of their opponent to slam the ball into the hoop, there are just so many things that could go wrong. Not to mention the poor sportsmanship that would be displayed by belittling your opponent the way Vince Carter did to Frédéric Weis in the 2000 Olympics. Not everyone was blessed with a 48’’ vertical.

Secondly, we do not want to run the risk of doing damage to our facilities. The SSC has worked hard to build solid relationships with the management team and the caretakers at our hundreds of facilities, and intend to nurture those relationships for years to come. If players start bending rims or tearing nets, not only will the SSC be hit with a huge bill upwards of a couple thousand dollars to replace those hoops (which would be handed to the players who caused the damage) but we could also lose our rental privileges altogether. Without facilities, we cannot run our leagues. It’s as simple as that.

In summary, if you are gifted with the ability to “fly” through the air and to the hoop, by all means that is something you should be proud of! I’d be proud if I could do that too. However, the SSC leagues are not the place to show off your abilities.
