Like most team sports, each player on a Basketball team has a specific position where they are responsible for certain roles. Your unique skills and physical traits may help determine which position you are most suited for.

Point Guard: Brings the ball up the court and sets up the play.

  • Usually the shortest player on the team
  • Excellent ball handling and passing ability
  • Court vision
  • Leadership qualities

Shooting Guard: Not the primary ball handler but is the most dynamic scorer.

  • Usually taller than a point guard but shorter than a small forward
  • Excellent perimeter shooting ability
  • Above average ball handling ability
  • Quick
  • Strong will to score

Small Forward: All-purpose player on offense that’s a combination of size, speed and strength.

  • Well balanced skill set (solid passer, shooter, defender, etc.)
  • Tall/big enough to post-up and score in the key but agile enough to ball handle and shoot well from the perimeter
  • Determined

Power Forward: Think strength and tenacity! Generally a team’s best rebounder and most aggressive defender.

  • Has some bulk/muscles and toughness
  • A knack for rebounding and blocking shots
  • Must be able to catch passes and hit shots near the basket
  • Athletic enough to move with some quickness around the lane

Center: Primary responsibilities are defending the basket and rebounding. They rarely venture far from the hoop.

  • Often the tallest player on a team
  • Should be able to post up offensively
  • An uncanny ability to rebound and block shots

Lastly, please choose a position based on more than just your physical attributes! For example, the tallest player on the team does not automatically have to play center. Find the best position for you by focusing on your skills and abilities and don’t be afraid to experiment!
