Let’s Talk Strategy – Throwing at the Same Target

Have you ever played a game of dodgeball against a team whose attack was so coordinated, so vociferous, so intimidating, and so precise that they left you dazed and confused before half? Yeah – me too. But I’m here to tell you that with a little organization and a game plan, you and your team can rock an attack like that too.

In dodgeball, the rules are simple: eliminate the players on the opposing team by hitting them with the ball below the shoulders before they eliminate your team’s players. Increase your probability of hitting an opponent without them catching your throw by increasing the number of balls being thrown at the same target – math!

To implement this tactic, come up with a system of identifying your opposition and communicate it with your team. You could number them 1-6 based on their position on the court (i.e. far left is one and far right is six), or be silly and call them out by their fun costumes or identifying markers on their outfits (i.e. superman or blue shorts). The less they know about where you are going to throw the ball, the better!

Next, pick up your dodgeballs as a team – remember that players have ten seconds to release the ball once is has been picked up. Picking up together will give you the most amount of time to coordinate your attack. Also, having the maximum number of balls being thrown at you is intimidating – even for veteran catchers!

Finally, throw TOGETHER! Have someone count you down – 3! 2! 1! – and let them fly! Remember to always aim below the shoulders and aim for the same target. Get a little more coordinated and your outside throwers can cross over so that your far left teammate aims right of the target and your far right teammate aims left of the player. That little trick will leave your target with little room to laterally dodge.

Happy syncro-throws and remember to welcome your opponents to Ouchtown, population: you, bro!
