A vibration dampener is a small, removable device that attaches onto the strings of the racquet. This device absorbs the transfer of energy from the ball to the strings, which silences the “ping” sound that can be heard when striking a ball. Although it may be your strategy to distract your opponent with the high frequency noise of your stroke, if you would prefer a more silent approach, then a dampener may be something worth checking out.

Dampeners are most commonly found in small, circular shapes (referred to as “buttons”), or elongated shapes (referred to as “worms”) in various colours; however Tennis legend Andre Agassi uses a simple rubber band which may be a good way to experiment if a dampener is right for you! Due to ITF regulations, they can be placed anywhere outside the pattern of crossed strings, with the typical placement at the bottom of the racquet.

Although the main purpose of a dampener is for audible reasons, some players may notice a difference with how it feels too. This is subjective to each player, however it is important to know that this device will not prevent or cure a Tennis related injury. There are other ways to improve the comfort of the game such as finding the best racquet for your style and needs, however if you’re looking for a subtle change for minimal cost, a vibration dampener may be something worth trying out.
