We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do. We've Got Spirit, How 'Bout You?

Thursday, March 30, 2023

A NEW SPIRIT POINT SYSTEM IS IN TOWN. At the Sport and Social Club, ‘improvement’ is the name of the game. We are constantly seeking feedback from our players because our Club wouldn’t be our Club without you. Over the past several months, our team has been working on a full overhaul of our Spirit Point System to better match what our players value most, and to make our processes for managing sportsmanship issues at league nights cleaner and faster. This past Winter 2023 season, several divisions were selected to trial the new system and provide their feedback. Their feedback?

Keeping Things in Line is Never a Drag

DID YOU KNOW?
That we have a Field Maintenance Program?
That we invest tens of thousands of dollars each year into this program?
That we maintain an average of 90 playing fields each season?

Most players are aware of the City’s involvement in sports field maintenance, but not many are aware of the Club’s involvement. Call it a humble brag, but we’re proud of the program we’ve built and we want YOU to know about it.

3 Frisbee Drinking Games to Hone Your Ultimate Skills

Wednesday, April 10, 2019

After a long, Alberta winter, it’s time to blow the dust off your frisbee and get ready for another whirlwind season of Ultimate! Unfortunately, in addition to the frisbee being dusty, you and your friends are feeling very rusty from your pizza and Netflix induced off-season. Sounds like you guys may need to head out for some practice before your first Ultimate game of the season. However, getting your buddies out to do wind sprints and passing drills is not going to have a high attendance rate.

Show Your EC Appreciation

Our Event Coordinators are players just like you that volunteer to help facilitate our Indoor Volleyball, Badminton, Flag Football, Ultimate, and Tennis leagues. They play a huge role in ensuring that all players enjoy themselves each and every night. Tasks include bringing equipment to the gym/field, setting up, doing the pre-game announcements, keeping the games on time, reporting the scores to the office, and more!

The Ultimate Lingo

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Ultimate Frisbee is quickly becoming a global phenomenon. The emergence of the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) as the first professional league in North America shows how there is a rising fanbase for the sport. If you’re looking to get familiar with all the phrases, lingo, and terminology, hopefully this guide is right for you:

The 'Ultimate' Fun-First League

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

The Club has been approached several times regarding one very specific, very odd rule in the Ultimate rulebook; “Ultimate tradition includes singing your opponent a song, reciting a poem or playing an activity after a game.” Yes, we know this rule is in the rulebook and no, it’s not a joke.

Chants and cheers have become an extremely important part of the game worldwide and the typical “Go Team!” has been replaced with, let’s be honest, some pretty R-rated cheers pre or post-game. Don’t believe me? Google it.

The ‘Ultimate’ Spirit of the Game

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Referees. You love them or you hate them. But you mostly hate them, because they’re always biased towards the other team, right? Let’s just get rid of them. What happens then? TOTAL CHAOS?! No way, Jose.

Ultimate Frisbee has always been and always will be a self-officiated game and this fits right in with how we operate our leagues. Coincidence? I think not. If you read the Official Rules of Ultimate (one of the eleven editions… seriously… eleven) you’ll see the phrase ‘Spirit of the Game’ over and over and over.

Best Technique for a Long Huck

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

There’s likely no play more exciting in Ultimate than the huck. It’s how you start every point, and how some teams make some BIG plays. The question is; how do the best throwers in the game throw the disc so far and with so much accuracy? Well, that’s what I (and a lot of internet crawling/YouTube binging) am here for.

Simply put, a huck is when you throw the disc far. Yup. That’s it. Throw it far. But! To throw a solid huck, you need three things: proper grip, proper spin, and POWERRR.
