Ultimate Frisbee is quickly becoming a global phenomenon. The emergence of the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) as the first professional league in North America shows how there is a rising fanbase for the sport. If you’re looking to get familiar with all the phrases, lingo, and terminology, hopefully this guide is right for you:

Airbender- An airbender is a player who is incredibly skilled at all different types of throws in the game. They can throw with great accuracy, and with different trajectories, spins and curves. They are the most prestigious players in the game.

Bid- A bid is one of those highlight reel catches you occasionally see on SportsCentre. Those grabs where players fly through the air, stretching out (like Superman) to reel in the disk.

Callahan- The Callahan is the rare feat of catching an opponent’s pass in their own end-zone resulting in a point for the catcher’s team. It’s rare that you would ever see this occur.

Chilly- This is the Ultimate community’s way to say “stay calm”. There can be a lot of pressure on making throws for newbies and especially when faced by tough defense. “Stay chilly” is an encouraging remark to encourage players to slow down the game in their mind.

Dump- A dump pass is used when giving the disc to someone behind you with a short pass.

Get Big- Not every pass is perfect. Some get away from us and begin to soar into the air. Other times, you’re intentionally passing high to avoid a defender. “Get Big” is called out when a disc is soaring and a player may need to soar into the skies to retrieve it.

Lag- Lag refers to the flight time of the disc. If it catches some air and hangs around longer than expected, it is said to be lagging.

Pull- The Pull is similar to a tip off, kick off, or puck drop in other sports. It’s the first throw to start a game or a new point.

Taco- When the taco arrives, it is a sad day. This usually marks an instance when a disk has become broke or deformed during play.
