What Height Is Right?

Wednesday, April 10, 2019

Do you know what a fun volleyball drinking game is? Taking a swig every time you hear someone say “is this net the right height?” followed by them reaching an arm up to measure. I guarantee that you’ll be 105% hydrated by the end of the game!

Nets in our leagues should all be set to men’s height, also known as 2.43 meters or 7 feet and 11 5/8 inches. Oftentimes this will be marked on the volleyball poles for ease of reference while setting up. No markings on the pole? Going with the highest setting is often a good bet!

If all else fails… use your arm to measure!

Why Legends? A Player’s Perspective.

As both a longtime player and longtime employee of the Sport & Social Club, I am a huge advocate of our Legends Leagues. My advocacy is founded on the primary belief that as you age, you change. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just part of life… your priorities change and your time becomes even more precious than it used to be. It’s hard to find time to stay active and social as your life is full with family, work, your home, your yard, your dog, chiro, massage, acupuncture, etc. and staying out to all hours of the night (or anytime past 10:00pm) just isn’t feasible anymore! I get it.

Communication is Key

It’s game night, your laces are tied, your jersey is looking fly, and you’re ready to play. Now imagine with me the following scenarios…

Scenario 1: A ball is lobbed over the net. You think to yourself, “Surely someone else has got it.” Meanwhile your teammates are all thinking the exact same thing. Thud. The ball hits the ground.

Just another day at the beach…

For three years I had the pleasure of living in Bermuda, a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. My summer evenings were filled with playing beach volleyball down at the world-famous Horseshoe Bay Beach. The beach would be lined with nets and teams from one end to the other, bluetooth’s were pumping and the energy was just… electric. After the games we’d pack up the nets and head over to the local pub for a few bevvies before calling it a night.
