Sponsored by The Canadian Brewhouse

The ESSC Team of the Week program is all about recognizing teams that are dedicated to positive sportsmanship and playing with a fun-first mentality.

How it works: Each week throughout the season the ESSC will recognize one team for their positive attitude and great sporting behavior. To be eligible, teams must first be nominated for the Lady Bing Award in a given season. All nominated teams will then have a chance to submit a photo and a short biography in order to be eligible for a Team of the Week Prize.

Prize: Each Team of the Week winner will receive a $100 gift card to The Canadian Brewhouse and will be recognized on social media.

You can help us recognize great sportsmanship by nominating a team for the Lady Bing Award. Click here to nominate a team!

Beyond the joy of competition, their favorite aspect of the sport they play, which is soccer, lies in the camaraderie and bonding that comes with being part of an inclusive and supportive team. Together, they sprinkle joy and positivity while running, passing, and shooting the ball, winning often, but also creating unforgettable memories and friendships that last a lifetime. The Great Hambinos
Captain: Joe Chapman

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Slo-Pitch
Seasons in the ESSC: 1
Nominated by: Featherless Bipeds

History:

The Great Hambinos are Abdi, Ben, Craig, David, Denis, Edden, Franz, Joanne, Joe, Krista, Kristin, Mike and Steve. We don’t really have nicknames other than Kristin is “Stretch” and Denis is “The Big Cat” and many of us are just old timers. However, some of us are youngsters too. In fact, we have an age range of almost 50 years. Our team name comes from the great baseball movie The Sandlot. The catcher for the sandlot baseball team is Ham and he has invented an alter-ego wrestler named The Great Hambino. If you have not seen the movie The Sandlot, you really have to see it soon. It’s a classic. This is our first year in the ESSC as a team although a few of us have played for other teams in the past. I would have to say our favourite thing about the game is cheering for each other and trying not to get injured too badly! Finally, thank you to whoever nominated us for a Lady Bing Award.

Team Bio
YEG Jets
Captain: Andrew Stockley

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Slo-Pitch
Seasons in the ESSC: 1
Nominated by: The Great  Hambinos

History:

Jets are known to be fast and agile; modern machines of precision engineering - we however, are not those Jets. Our speed is diminished, our balance suspect, and we've definitely got a few screws loose. The YEG Jets slo-pitch team is made up of employees of Edmonton International Airport who were looking for a fun way to connect with colleagues outside of the workplace. This is our first year playing with the ESSC and first time playing the sport for many of our team members. We love that the sport of slo-pitch gives us an opportunity to be active and build community with one another, while having a good laugh at ourselves along the way.

Team Bio

Aca Pitches
Captain: Jeremy Weerasooriya

Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational South Slo-Pitch
Seasons in the ESSC: 5
Nominated by: Mikaela Donnelly - Chickson Dix

History: The original Aca Pitches started 5 years ago, consisting largely of employees from the south side Costco. The choice of their team name was a result of a team vote, as they are all big fans of the movie Pitch Perfect. Their favorite aspect of ESSC Slo-Pitch is the lack of pressure to win. They find it's a lot easier to recruit players who have never played before when the main goal is to go out and have fun on a summer evening!

Team Bio
Andreo's cousins and uncle
Captain: Andreo Silva

Night/Div/Sport: Wednesday Recreational Outdoor Soccer
Seasons in the ESSC: 6
Nominated by: Yen Tan - UKnighted

History: Andreo's cousins and uncle used to be called "Giuseppe's Nephews" because their uncle started the team with Andreo and his cousins, but as time went by the team name turned to Andreo's cousins and uncle. A few of the team's members are actually cousins and all the new team members have been adopted as new cousins onto the team which makes playing soccer together that much better. They all hang out at and away from soccer and always have a great time playing together. Their team picture below basically sums them up, fun and always having snacks at half (it was popsicles at the game this picture was taken).

Congratulations Calm Your Tips!

Congratulations to The Fris-Bee's on being selected as one of our Teams of the Week!

Las Vegas Golden Knights
Captain: Milan Djumic

Night/Div/Sport: Wednesday Recreational A Multi-Sport

Nominated by: Larysa Szymanski - Games Coordinator

History: The Las Vegas Golden Nights were nominated by Larysa for being a super nice team that always helps her with setting up of equipment for each game. Their claim to fame is playing their first game before the NHL team which technically should give them the rights to the team name. Their favorite aspect of playing in the Multi-Sport league is every week a different person turns out to be their MVP when his/her sport comes around. This gives everyone a chance to shine.

Spring 2018 Winners

Team Bio
Easton Fection
Captain: Andrea Bliss

Night/Div/Sport: Sunday Recreational Slo-Pitch
Seasons in the ESSC: 10
Nominated by: Inglorious Batters

Say it three times fast: EASTON FECTION, EASTON FECTION, EASTON FECTION! We are itching for a win!

Unfortunately, this season, we didn’t get many of those (1 to be exact) but the winning is an after thought for us – no matter how we perform, we make sure to do our best, and most importantly, have fun! Our team is an amalgamation of two teams (OEM Speed Wagon and Easton Fection) that came together over the years and stuck with the Easton Fection name. We aren’t sure where the name came from, but it usually gets us a few laughs for those who get it. We have been playing with ESSC since the late 2000’s, winning Gold a number of times throughout those years, and look forward to many more!

The Snails
Captain: Steve Hughes

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Outdoor Soccer
Seasons in the ESSC: 8
Nominated by: Crystal Palace

The Snails have been playing with the ESSC since 2015, with some players having played with the ESSC since 2010. We love that the ESSC provides a laid back, co-ed league so we can play with friends and partners in a just-for-fun environment, and one of our favourite things has been watching beginner soccer players improve to become some of the best players on our team.

Team Bio
Motion to Strikeouts
Captain: Daniel Vassberg

Night/Div/Sport: Tuesday Recreational Slo-Pitch
Seasons in the ESSC: 1st
Nominated by: Finding Nemo

We’re the Motion to Strikeouts, a reference to the fact that the team is almost entirely composed of lawyers in the public service (except for Scott, our resident “Man of Industry” and nefarious capitalist), as well as a reference to the obscene number of times our members strike out. Two birds - one stone, as they say. Although we’d need hundreds of stones to kill two birds, as we can’t aim a throw either. But I digress. This is our first season playing ESSC Rookie slo-pitch, but many of us are also in our third season of ESSC soccer (as the Motion to Strikers, with a flawless 0-18-2 record). The group really enjoys the social aspect of slo-pitch, and looks forward to finishing the season strong (or weak, we’re not picky).

Team Bio
ER Toe Taggers
Captain: Leanne Ball

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Dodgeball
Seasons in the ESSC: 3
Nominated by: Games Coordinator

History:

Our team is the ER Toe Taggers. We are all either doctors or nurses that work at the Grey Nuns emergency department.

Our job and work environment is high stress and demanding, which is why we are so happy to come and play dodgeball, even if we lose every game! Playing dodgeball once a week has definitely helped boost the morale in our work environment which was very low through the pandemic.

We have played dodgeball for 3 seasons and will switch to slow pitch in the summer. I’m sure we I’ll continue to play dodgeball next winter to keep up our spirits in our professional and personal lives.

Woohooo!!!

Team Bio
Smish Smash
Captain: Katie MacIsaac

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Badminton
Seasons in the ESSC: 1st
Nominated by: Games Coordinator

History:

My name is Katie (I’m the one in the purple t-shirt) and my teammate/wife/better-half is Alex (she’s the one in the Oilers t-shirt). Our team name is Smish Smash and the origin of it is that it was the first thing that came to Alex’s mind and we thought it sounded silly! This is our first season with ESSC and we’re loving it so far! Our favourite aspect of badminton is that despite being really bad at it, it’s still so much fun to hit the birdie and get a good rally going!

Team Bio

Team Bio
Bad Seeds
Captain: Robyn Jacobsen

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational A Badminton
Seasons in the ESSC: ~15
Nominated by: Jarret Esslinger - Jargan

History: Bad Seeds were nominated for the Lady Bing award because they are always fun to play against. Their team sprouted from basically, desperation. They couldn't think of a really excellent name, so they picked "Bad Seeds" by default. Bad is short for Badminton and Seeds is a play on the word "seed" as in, the ranking for the purposes of playoffs. However, it has stuck with them for years and they have grown to love it! Robyn and Joel love that playing Badminton is an opportunity to see each other once a week and catch up as they have been friends for over 20 years!

Seasons in the ESSC: 7

They enjoy the change of sport every week in multi-sport and they can see themselves constantly improving with each opportunity they get to play. They would be the first to say that they are definitely better at some sports than others, but they have a great time playing each one. Fairly average is the perfect way to describe their team, hence the name.

History:

At the start of 2022, Team Captains Kole “The Rooster” Visser and Carlos “The Snake” Palma decided to gather a bunch of co-workers from Laser City Edmonton. We, alongside some fantastic friends, came  together to create the 2 Laser 2 Tag Slo Pitch team. While a few members such as Taylor “The Bull” Blanchard have been a part of the ESSC in the past, we are excited to admit that for most of our awesome team, this is our first season playing together. We are very grateful for the opportunity to work together, as it has brought us closer and created a lot of great laughs! Working with team members such as Janet “The Bullet” Haslam, Renand “The Gamemaster” Fulgueras and Kaylah “The logistics” Steinhaur have been an absolute pleasure. Creating and sharing these memories with friends has definitely been a highlight of this ESSC experience and we can’t wait to share them with the other teams soon!

The Flighting Gazelles
Captain: Taylor Niezen

Night/Div/Sport: Monday Recreational Ball Hockey
Seasons in the ESSC: 1st
Nominated by: Games Coordinator

History:

The team was clumsily conceived in the darkest hours of a hot and sticky August night. The Founding Members discovered that their pints had been finished and wondered where it all went wrong. That fateful night, the Captain and Husband birthed the team by mistake, registering a group of ragtag individuals for ball hockey instead of tiddlywinks. A near-mythic opening game, in a rocky first season, sparked a legacy of hard-nosed but fair play and provided a name for these spindly but tough athletes – The Fighting Gazelles.

Toe Taggers
Captain: Sean Rogers

Night/Div/Sport: Wednesday Recreational Slo-Pitch
Seasons in the ESSC: 7th
Nominated by: Taxmanian Devils

History:

Our team is made up of mostly nurses and doctors. We work at the Grey Nuns Emergency department, and we have played together for 7 years, while taking 2020 summer off due to covid. Our favorite part of playing is being able to enjoy spending time together away from work, blow off some steam, have fun together and rebuild some morale. Our team name is a bit of a dark joke, a play on words from using bag tags at work and tagging people out by their toe at the game.
