Format and Rosters

League Format

The ESSC offers two different Dodgeball Formats:

 Format  Description
Rubber This is the classic Dodgeball format using rubber playground balls. This format plays mostly out of citywide facilities. There is also a regional "South" offering and a "Sherwood Park" offering to choose from depending on the season.
Foam This is the classic Dodgeball format using foam rhino-skin balls. This format allows for a non-threatening, no-sting experience while still providing fun and exciting action. This format plays out of citywide facilities.
  • All Dodgeball Leagues are single-opponent; teams will play one match per week.
  • All Dodgeball Leagues use a Games Coordinator (GC).

Game Format

  • All Dodgeball Leagues use a weekly time slot of 1.00 hour.
  • Each match is 60 minutes long including a 5 minute warm-up and a 5 minute half time.
  • A match consists of as many games that can be completed in the 50 minutes of playing time. No single game can exceed 5 minutes.
  • A game is won when one team eliminates all of the opposing players on the court. Each game is worth one point.
  • The team with the most games won during the time slot wins the match.
    • For regular season games, if the match ends and both teams have the same amount of games won, the match will be recorded as a tie.

Season Length

  • All 9 Week Dodgeball Leagues use the following structure:
    • 7 weeks of regular season games.
    • 2 weeks of playoff games.
  • All 8 Week (Summer) Dodgeball Leagues use the following structure:
    • 6 weeks of regular season games.
    • 2 weeks of playoff games.
  • There may be instances where byes are scheduled due to facility availability, meaning the season may be played over 9-12 total weeks.
  • In rare cases, games may be played on Long Weekends or Holidays.

Playoffs

  • Playoff Format:
    • All teams are guaranteed 2 playoff games.
    • Only the Top 4 teams will compete for the League Championship.
    • League champs will receive t-shirts that can be picked up from the Season-end Party.
    • There are no ties in playoffs.
      • Each playoff match will end at 50 minutes. The remaining 5 minutes will be used for a tie-breaking game (if necessary). This game will be the same format as all other games and will determine the winner. If still tied at the completion of the 5 minute tie-breaker, a sudden-death scenario will occur.

  • When registering a full team, there is no limit to the maximum number of players you can have on the roster.
  • Prior to the first game of the season, teams must have 6 players confirmed on the roster in MyESSC. This number is equal to the total number of players required on the court in the above chart.
    • If the minimum amount of confirmed roster players is not met, the team will receive a loss for every game played until the requirement is met.
  • Prior to the first playoff game, teams must have all players who are playing in the playoff game(s) displayed as part of the confirmed roster in MyESSC.
    • If this requirement is not met, teams will receive an automatic loss and will not be eligible for the championship.
  • A team may bring in subs that are not listed on the roster. To learn more about the sub policies, click here.
