Format and Rosters

League Format

The ESSC offers multiple Turf Soccer Formats:

Premium
6 vs. 6

Using modified outdoor rules, play on premium surfaces comprised of artificial 'field-turf' technology. Leagues play specifically out of Commonwealth Field House, Edmonton Soccer Dome, Turf Training Centre, or Foote Field.

Premium
5 vs. 5

Using modified outdoor rules, play on premium surfaces comprised of artificial 'field-turf' technology. Leagues play exclusively out of the  Phillet Centre.

Boarded
6 vs. 6

Using indoor soccer rules, play out of full-size artificial surfaces with boards and netting. Leagues play out of the Edmonton Soccer Centres, although there is a Sherwood Park (Millennium Place) option as well.

Turf / Outdoor Soccer Split Using modified outdoor rules, the season will start with 4 weeks of Turf Soccer played at citywide locations that include the brand new turf field at the Turf Training Centre. The season will conclude with 5 weeks of Outdoor Soccer played at citywide field locations using the standard outdoor 6 vs. 6 format.
  • All Turf Soccer Leagues are single-opponent; teams will play one game per week.
  • All Turf Soccer Leagues use a Games Coordinator (GC).

Game Format

  • The total floor time is 60 minutes. Each game consists of a warm-up, two 25 minute halves, and a 5 minute intermission.
  • In regular season games, ties are allowed - there will be no overtime or shoot-outs.

Season Length

  • All 9 Week Turf Soccer Leagues use the following structure:
    • 7 weeks of regular season games.
    • 2 weeks of playoff games.
  • All 8 Week (Summer) Turf Soccer Leagues use the following structure:
    • 6 weeks of regular season games.
    • 2 weeks of playoff games.
  • There may be instances where byes are scheduled due to facility availability, meaning the season may be played over 9-12 total weeks. 
  • In rare cases, games may be played on Long Weekends or Holidays.

Playoffs

  • Playoff Format:
    • All teams are guaranteed 2 playoff matches.
    • Only the Top 4 teams will compete for the League Championship.
    • League champs will receive t-shirts that can be picked up from the Season-end Party.
    • There are no ties in playoffs:
      • Halves are shortened to allow for a penalty kick shoot-out, should it be required. 
      • 5 players from each team will alternate shots from the penalty-mark at one end of the gym.
        • The initial 5 players will have a three male maximum.
      • If the score is still tied after the initial round of penalty kicks, the penalty kicks will continue in sudden-death fashion:
        • Both teams must shoot in the sudden-death round, the team shooting first does not win if they score.
        • ​A player is not allowed to take a second shot if there are players on his/her team of the same gender that have not yet shot. 
        • The shooting team must alternate males and females.

  • When registering a full team, there is no limit to the maximum number of players you can have on the roster.
  • A female goalie does not count towards the female minimum required on the court.
  • Prior to the first game of the season, teams must have the total number of players required on the field (in the above chart) confirmed on the roster in MyESSC.
    • If the minimum amount of confirmed roster players is not met, the team will receive a loss for every game played until the requirement is met.
  • Prior to the first playoff game, teams must have all players who are playing in the playoff game(s) displayed as part of the confirmed roster in MyESSC.
    • If this requirement is not met, teams will receive an automatic loss and will not be eligible for the championship.
