Nobody signs up for a season hoping to absolutely steamroll every team they play. Okay… maybe it’s kind of fun to score a bunch of points once or twice, but every week? That gets old pretty quickly. Being the team getting steamrolled definitely isn’t what anyone signed up for either.
Skill disparity is consistently one of the most common pieces of feedback we receive, and creating divisions where teams get evenly matched games is something we put a lot of work into behind the scenes.
The question is, how do we decide whether your team belongs in Rec A, Rec B, Rec Plus, or wherever else you end up? Is there a giant hat in the office that we pull team names out of? Do we just look at your team name and decide that Sets on the Beach sounds suspiciously good at Volleyball? Thankfully, no, there’s actually quite a bit that goes into it. The process happens in two stages: Sub-Dividing & Stats Research before the season begins, and Division Realignment once games are underway. Here’s a little peek behind the curtain at how it all works.
With hundreds of teams registering every season across all our sports, building fair divisions isn't something we eyeball. Before a single whistle blows, our team digs into the history of every registered team to figure out where they truly belong.
Here's what that actually looks like:
We pull the stats. For every returning team, we look at their previous win/loss record, point differential, and how many players overlap with their new roster. A team that went 7-0 last season and is bringing back the same core group isn't getting slotted into the same division without a second look.
We factor in playoffs, not just the regular season. A team that finished 4th in the standings but won league champs is still a strong candidate to move up. Same goes for a team that dominated the regular season but lost early in playoffs.
We consider special requests, within reason. New to the club and want to start in a lower division? We'll usually accommodate that. Went 8-0 last season and are asking to stay in Beginner or Really Rec? That's a tougher sell.
When enough teams register, we split larger divisions into sub-divisions (A, B, C, etc.). So the top teams within a skill level aren't stuck playing the bottom teams within that same skill level all season. When we don't have enough teams to sub-divide a league, there is likely to be more skill disparity within the division.
None of this is guesswork, it's an ongoing research process built on real data from real seasons. Is it perfect every time? No. New teams with zero history are always the trickiest to place, since we're working with a lot less information. Which brings us to the second process.
Even with all that pre-season research, sometimes a team just doesn't fit where they've landed. It's typically a new team, since we simply don't have prior stats to work with. That's where mid-season Division Realignment comes in.
When does it happen? We don't make any moves in the first week or two of a season, we want a real sample size of games before making a call. Generally, realignment happens around week 2 or 3 for most 8- and 9-week seasons. Five week leagues are too short for a mid-season swap.
What are we looking for?
Record: Teams need to be unbeaten (or winless) through their first several games
Point differential: An unbeaten record paired with close scores tells a different story than an unbeaten record with lopsided ones. We want to see that the results reflect a real skill gap.
Strength of schedule: Who has that team actually been playing? A perfect record against weaker opponents doesn't necessarily mean a team is ready to move up.
Games played: Both teams involved in a potential swap need to have played the same number of games. Bye weeks can throw this off, so we account for that.
History: If a team got moved down last season and is off to a hot start, that context matters too.
When we do make a move, it's always a swap. A team overperforming in a lower division trades places with a team struggling in the division above, and no team jumps more than one division or sub-division at a time.
Building evenly matched divisions is one of those things that's never finished. It's a process we're constantly refining, both before your season starts and while it's underway. We won't get it perfect 100% of the time (new teams keep us on our toes), but every decision behind the scenes is aimed at the same goal: making sure your games are as fun and competitive as possible.
