For me, playing in ESSC leagues is more than just the scoreboard. It’s about community, getting active, learning something new, and of course being humbled by sports that have no business deflating your ego that much—that's right Ultimate; I’m looking at you.
The community I want to highlight here is the amazing community of women we have at the ESSC playing in our leagues. The ladies who continue to show up, support each other, and make each season better than the last. The community that makes me feel like I belong, even though I have no idea how to properly hold a hockey stick. Seriously, why am I the only person out here dropping their stick? If you ask me, the more women we can get out there playing, the stronger this community becomes.
The wins, the losses, the highs and lows. I can always count on the ladies of the ESSC to be there through it all. You assisted a goal in Outdoor Soccer? They’ll cheer loud and proud. Get your first overhand serve in Volleyball? High fives for days. You biffed it running full speed into the Tennis divider at Saville trying to return the ball? They’ll tell you that you looked great doing it. Forgot your shin guards for the fifth week in a row? Sisterhood of the Travelling Shinnies. Blocked a shot in Ball Hockey? They’ll be checking in on your butt cheek’s welfare all night, AND the next day.
Jokes aside, the time spent on and off the pitch/court/field with the ESSC are some of my favourite memories.
Setting up mi amiga for a snipe of a goal in Ball Hockey, learning a new sport with ladies who have played only Soccer their entire lives, getting mercied twice in a Ball Hockey double-header with your gal pals, deciding to join Intermediate Volleyball just to play the Women’s format fully knowing you’re all Rec B players at best.
These are the moments that keep me going and keep me coming back to add more sports to my repertoire. The moments that remind me it’s never just about the games; it’s about the people you play them with, and the bonds you build through sport.
You shouldn't need to go full She’s the Man hunky-dude to get the playing time you deserve. That's why we’ve made it super simple to up your minutes, and we're throwing a little extra somethin-somethin in for you (no, not fake sideburns).
We’re introducing a referral program to continue to grow this amazing community of women. Do you have a gal pal that you think would have fun in our leagues? Refer them using the form to earn $30 towards any ESSC league, tournament or event. The best part is they will receive $30 off too! Full details of the referral program are found in the form.
