When we first added Handball to our sport lineup, we had a lot of questions from our players who didn't know much about it. They weren't too familiar with this new sport and actually thought it was strictly a European game. That's not true at all! Here are a few facts that will make you realize just how Canadian (and Albertan) Handball is becoming:

  • The Canadian Team Handball Federation was founded in 1962 and they are dedicated to supporting and promoting Handball within Canada.
  • Alberta is one of only three provinces that are full members, with other provinces being associate or affiliate members.
  • The Alberta Team Handball Federation is made up of Men's and Women's Senior, Junior, and Youth teams.
  • There are also Men's and Women's National teams.
  • The annual Alberta Cup brings in Handball teams from across Alberta and other provinces.
  • From 2008-2014, 21 Albertan Handball players went on to play on bigger European teams.
  • Handball first appeared at the Olympics in 1936.
  • Handball was added to the Pan American Games in 1987.

We're excited to see where the sport goes next and to now be one of the many Canadian organizations helping it grow!
