Handball is a brand new sport for the ESSC, which was first offered in the Fall of 2015. Due to the fact that Handball is not a widely played sport in North America, there are some things that all new players must learn before making their way to the court.

  • Know the rules!
    • It’s unsportsmanlike to not know the rules of any sport you are playing. Click here to find the ESSC Handball rulebook.
  • Watch where you put your hands
    • It is very common to get a little ‘handsy’ in Handball and accidentally smack someone in the arm or even face
    • A general rule of most rec sports is to just not touch anyone else
  • Stay out of the crease
    • Only goalies are allowed in the crease
    • You can’t go in there, ever (unless you are jumping into the crease to shoot the ball and throw it before you land)
  • The dribble rule has changed
    • You can dribble after your three steps and continue to dribble and move
    • Know this rule well, as it was different in the past and could be a point of contest
  • Don’t get discouraged if the other team scores a lot
    • There are often over 50 goals scored in Handball games
    • Chances are you will score a ton, just be patient

If you can follow these simple tips then you are on your way to playing fun and exciting ESSC Handball. Remember, there are GC’s at all Handball games and they are there to facilitate, so if you have any questions be sure to ask them.

Have fun out there.
