If you’ve decided to sign-up for an ESSC Curling League or Tournament and are new to the sport, you’ve come to the right place! Other curling leagues in Edmonton are typically quite competitive but our ‘fun-first, winning-second’ leagues are perfect for beginners. Here are a couple tips for our ‘newbies’:

Safety:

  • Wear shoes with soft rubber soles for maximum grip and always ensure they are clean before entering the arena area.
  • When stepping onto the ice, always step with your gripper foot first (i.e. not your slider foot). This may sound like common sense and you may be wondering who on earth would actually step onto the ice with their slider foot……..IT WAS ONE TIME!
  • When throwing rocks, wait until you have stopped sliding forward before attempting to stand up, and then rise on your gripper foot (i.e. not your slider foot). If you’re like me, you’ll have to wait until you’ve stopped spinning in circles after tossing your rock.
  • Do not step over stones.

Rules:

  • The sport is a lot more fun for everyone when players understand the rules. To read the ESSC Curling Rulebook, Click Here.

Clothing:

  • Although they look good with nearly everything, do not wear jeans as they are quite restrictive.
  • Do not play with bare legs/knees because it can melt/leave marks in the ice. If you are wondering why anyone would choose to dress up like this to curl, you likely haven’t been to our Curling FunSpiel (as teams go all-out on their uniforms/costumes).

Etiquette:

  • All curlers must try to keep their hands, knees and bodies off the ice, as it can melt/leave marks in the ice.
  • Please feel free to yell curling terms to your teammates (e.g. Hurry Haaaaaaarrrrd), but maybe don’t yell at people unless it’s related to the game smiley
